English at work: meetings, calls, updates and emails

Most people who want better English at work do not need to discuss balance sheets in formal vocabulary. They need to explain why a task is late, ask a client to clarify one sentence, give a two-minute update, write a follow-up that gets a reply, and speak before the meeting moves on without them. The course name is broad, but its promise is narrow: practise English for situations that happen at work. It is not a personality-development course, an accent makeover, a management qualification or a certificate programme.

First: do you actually need this course?

This distinction matters because language courses often accept everybody into the same batch. That increases enrolments and produces a bad class: the beginner cannot follow, the confident speaker gets bored, and the teacher spends the hour trying to serve two different levels.

The five workplace situations worth practising

1. Status updates

A useful update has four parts: what finished, what is happening now, what is blocked, and what happens next. Many learners know every word but bury the update under ten minutes of background. The professional skill is structure, not difficult vocabulary.

2. Meetings

Meeting confidence is not talking for the longest time. It is entering at the right moment, stating one point clearly, and checking that the group understood it. Practise interrupting politely, asking for clarification, disagreeing without sounding hostile and summarising the decision before the call ends.

3. Client and customer calls

Client-facing English needs recovery phrases because real calls do not follow scripts. You mishear a number, the customer changes the topic, the requirement is vague, or you do not know the answer. A learner who can say, ‘I want to make sure I understood that correctly’ is safer than one who memorised fifty impressive phrases and guesses.

4. Emails and workplace messages

5. Presentations and explanations

A presentation is an explanation with a visible structure. Start with the problem, show the important evidence, recommend an action and stop. Business English practice should include handling questions and honestly saying when you need to check something; pretending to know is not fluency.

What a serious course should include

• Live speaking time: not a webinar where the teacher talks for forty minutes.
• Role-plays with consequences: delays, complaints, unclear requirements and disagreement — not only easy introductions.
• Correction during practice: specific enough that you know what to change next time.
• Writing tied to a situation: updates, follow-ups and escalation messages, not generic grammar worksheets.
• A level check: beginners and confident professionals should not be pushed into the same class.
• Transparent limits: exact duration, maximum batch size, weekly frequency, fees and whether a certificate exists.

Trial classes are common across the market. Do not judge a provider because the first class is free. Count your own speaking minutes, notice whether the teacher corrects useful patterns, and ask what the actual batch size is. Those answers are harder to fake than a polished sales page.
