If you have looked for spoken English classes in Kolkata, you have probably found the same two things: coaching centres in Gariahat, Salt Lake and around Rashbehari that run large batches, and online platforms that could be anywhere. This page is about the third option, and about being honest regarding when the first one is the better choice.
One thing first, so nobody wastes a trip. Our registered address at 75/2/4 Raja Ram Mohan Roy Road, Kolkata 700008 is an office, visitable by appointment. It is not a teaching campus and there is no walk-in coaching centre. Every class is online and live. The teacher is Kolkata-based and the timings are set for IST, but you attend from home.
Why Kolkata learners end up choosing online
It is usually not about the teaching. It is about the commute.
A spoken English course runs up to two classes a week for three to six months. If you live in Behala or Dum Dum and the centre is in Gariahat or Sector V, you are spending 45 to 90 minutes each way. Twice a week for six months, that is roughly 75 to 155 hours of your life sitting in traffic on the EM Bypass — considerably more time than you will spend in the classroom.
Most people do not quit an English course because it was bad. They quit because after four weeks the journey home at 9pm stopped being worth it. Removing the commute is the single biggest thing you can do for your own attendance, and attendance is what decides whether any of this works.
The number that actually matters: batch size

The arithmetic is simple and it is not really a marketing claim. A teacher with 35 students in the room cannot give each of them ten minutes of speaking in an hour, no matter how good they are. In a batch of around six they can. That is why we keep the room small, and why the fee is what it is rather than ₹400.
So if a provider will not tell you their batch size, that is your answer. If they say 30 and the price is ₹500 a month, that is consistent and honest — it just means you are buying lectures rather than practice, and you should know which one you need.
Bengali and Hindi in an English classroom
Instruction is in English and all practice stays in English. But when a concept is not landing — usually tenses, articles or prepositions — the teacher will explain it in Bengali or Hindi, and then go straight back to English.
This is worth being direct about, because a lot of institutes advertise a strict English-only classroom as a feature. For a genuine beginner it is not a feature. An English-only room produces silence: the learner does not understand the explanation, cannot ask why in English, and so stops asking. Silence is the one thing a speaking class cannot afford.
There is a real second advantage to a Kolkata teacher here. Bengali first-language speakers make a predictable set of English errors — the v/w sound, dropped articles, "I am having" for "I have", question word order — and a teacher who grew up with the same first language knows what you meant and can correct the pattern rather than the sentence.
As your level rises, the first-language explanations stop being needed. That is the point of them.
What Kolkata learners are usually preparing for
Four things come up again and again, and each has a different course behind it.
IT and analytics roles in Sector V, New Town and Rajarhat
The technical interview is usually not the problem. The problem is the client call six months in, where you understand every word and cannot get a sentence out. That is workplace English rather than general fluency — meetings, status updates and disagreeing with a senior politely — which is covered in Workplace English.
The BPO and customer support cluster
Kolkata has a large voice and back-office sector, and the ceiling in it is well known: back-office work pays less than client-facing work and the jump requires evidence, not just accent training. IELTS for study abroad
Kolkata sends a lot of students to Canada, Australia and the UK. Writing is almost always the bottleneck, not Listening or Reading, and it only moves if somebody marks your essays individually. Campus placements
Group discussion and HR rounds fail more candidates than aptitude tests do, and both are speaking problems. Interview Preparation runs two months and includes three recorded mock interviews.

Batch timings, on IST
- Morning — before office hours, popular with homemakers and students
- Evening — from about 7pm, the default for working professionals
- Weekend — the usual choice for Sector V and BPO shifts, where weekday evenings are unreliable
Every class is recorded, so a missed session because of a release, escalation or shift change does not mean losing the lesson. A reschedule can be requested only within the same week and depends on teacher and slot availability.
When a Kolkata coaching centre is the better choice
There are real cases, and it would be dishonest to leave them out.
- You want people around you. A physical classroom gives you peers you actually see, and for some learners that accountability is what keeps them turning up. We substitute live polls, debates and a WhatsApp batch group, and it is not the same thing.
- Your internet is unreliable. A speaking class where the audio drops is worse than no class. If your connection cannot hold a video call for an hour, fix that first or go offline.
- You need a recognised certificate. We do not currently issue one. If a visa, a university or an HR checklist requires a credential, go to an established institution and expect to pay considerably more — that fee buys the certificate, not better teaching.
- The learner is a child. Our classes are built for learners from about 15 upwards. Teaching a nine-year-old is a different profession.
